Terry S. Semel, the CEO of Internet giant Yahoo, stepped down from his post Monday, minutes after the stock market had closed. He will be replaced by Yahoo co-founder and board member Jerry Yang.
"This is the time for new executive leadership, with different skills and strengths, to step in and drive the company to realize its full potential -- it is the right thing to do, and the right time is now," Semel said in a statement.
The move comes after shareholders at Yahoo's annual meeting last week voiced criticism of Semel and the company's direction under his leadership. Yahoo has been lagging behind its chief competitor Google.
The board yesterday also named Susan Decker, the executive vice president in charge of the advertiser and publisher group, as president of the company.
Under Semel's leadership in the last six years, the price of Yahoo's stock increased more than 170 percent. However, in the last year, the shares had fallen 10 percent. The stock climbed about 6 percent in after-hours trading following the announcement.
In 2006, Semel made more than $39.8 million, according to the company's proxy statement. In the statement, Yahoo said that because Semel resigned as CEO and will continue on as non-executive chairman, there will be no separation agreement.
Semel was appointed CEO and chairman of the board on May 1, 2001. Prior to that he headed up Windsor Media and before that he was chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. and Warner Music Group.
Yang has been on the board of Yahoo since March 1995. He co-developed Yahoo in 1994 while he was working towards his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Stanford University.
Yang also serves as a director of Yahoo! Japan Corporation, Cisco Systems, Inc. and Alibaba.com Corporation. He holds bachelor and masters degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
